Herbert Anthony Martin

1936 - 2018

Mr. Herbert Anthony Martin was the second of seven children
born to Hesketh Martin and Helena Joseph in Saint Marks, Grenada
on August 27, 1936. AS a youth he attended St. Marks Anglican
Church, where he was a bell ringer. He grew up with the sea in his
backyard and as such was an excellent swimmer in living water.
Occasionally reminiscing how in his younger days he would go
swimming for miles out into the sea with friends until you could no
longer see the shore. Upon graduating from St. Marks Catholic School
he apprenticed in his early teens as a shoemaker, from there he went
into agriculture.
By the age of twenty one and with the blessing of his father,
Herbert left the Island of Grenada to pursue his dreams in America.
Eventually settling in New York Herbert managed a chain of A+P
Grocery Stores.
Herbert met Faye the love of his life and on January 31,1976
they were married until her passing in 2016. This union produced a
son, Jason. Herbert became a member of the Presbyterian Church of
Saint Albans on February 25 1990. In later years he was ordained as
a Deacon. He loved his church at one point he was a Sunday School
teacher for 6th grade and he often prepared dishes for large gatherings
being held at the Church.
He enjoyed agriculture, for over 40 years he would grow a variety
of flowers fruits and vegetables in his backyard during the summer
months, friends who stopped by couldn’t leave without a bush of
vegetables.
He was always punctual and prided himself on being up before
the sunrise. He is a strong, resilient shining spirit. He was a friend to
everyone and a trusted confidant.
On January 15, 2025 Herbert was called home. He was
predeceased by his brother, George and his sisters, Martina and
Doris. He is survived by son, Jason; daughter, Allison; grandson,
Micheal and Jean; brother, Dennis; sisters, Berna and Vera; nephews,
Ali, Andre, Andre, Alwin and Austin; nieces, Alma, Daffney and
Michelle; and a host of other family members and friends.
His light will shine on forever
and may he always remain in peace.
Faithfully submitted by the Family
